Video: Save Your Tools!
Okay, raise your hand if you cleaned and sharpened all of your gardening tools before putting them away in the fall.

Yeah, we didn't do it either. Fall just gets too busy to get that last chore of the season finished before winter sets in.

No big deal. There's still plenty of time to get your gear garden-ready for spring. And it's the smart thing to do. Cleaning tools helps them last longer and keeps unwanted diseases, weed seeds and insect eggs from spreading throughout the garden. And sharp tools make cleaner cuts, which is safer and more effective.

With these tips from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension, you'll have it done in no time. Remember to thoroughly dry steel tools after cleaning to prevent rust from forming. Apply a spray-on rust inhibitor, or simply dip the tip of a clean cloth in a small amount of clean motor oil and rub down each tool to prevent rust.

All finished? You've just earned an A in tool-care essentials!
