Video: Hail the Bale!
 |
Have you heard the latest news about raised beds?
You can make instant ones with straw bales. It turns out they provide an ideal environment for growing vegetables and flowers. And they couldn't be easier to install. While it sounds implausible, it actually works and is a terrific option for gardeners with poor soil, limited space, bad backs or just an interest in a fun alternative to traditional beds.
P. Allen Smith demonstrates what kind of bales to use and how easy it is to plant them. His bed is fairly large, but you can easily create a straw bale garden in just about any sunny spot using only one or two bales. Weed-free and mud-free, they're both versatile and biodegradable.
For more detailed tips and ideas, check out Straw Bale Gardens (Cool Springs Press), a new book by Joel Karsten. We especially like his easy-to-follow instructions and clear photos, which make it easy to envision using straw bales in any landscape.
